So, why, all of a sudden, I am up to post a dal recipe that's not at all glamorous? No body seems to like moong dal. It has got the tag of 'food for sick people!' After all, it's so light to digest. But you see, there are certain days when you don't feel like doing all that elaborate cooking but still you are supposed to make dal. Of course, in most of the Indian households, no one can eat their meals without dal, even if they take only a single spoonful! But it needs to be tasty, just like tadka dal! This quick dal recipe is for those days!

You don't need to soak this dal or boil it separately. You also don't need to prepare the elaborate 'tadka'! Yet, it tastes superb, more flavorful than the tadka dal!

You can even make it in the morning when you are getting late for office but still you have to make the indispensable dal for the lunch of your dear family, back at home!

Now, let's get quickly to the quickest ever dal recipe!

Get these ingredients for your tasty moong dal

  • Yellow Moong dal (धुली मूँग की दाल) - 1 small cup
  • Cumin seeds (जीरा )- 1 tsp
  • Black mustard seeds (राई )- 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves (कढी पत्ता)- 8-10
  • Bay leaf (तेजपत्ता)- 1

  • Chili powder (मिर्च) - 1/4 tsp

  • Take all the whole spices and herbs together in a bowl- cumin seeds, mustard seeds, bay leaf, curry leaves and dry red chili.

  • Place your pressure cooker on the gas stove and heat the oil
  • Once heated, temper it with the mixed whole spices. You would love the aroma it gives out, just after few seconds.
  • Just when the cumin and mustard seeds splatter, add the washed moong dal.

  • Stir it for 1-2 minutes and then add turmeric powder, chili powder and salt.
  • After stirring for another 1-2 minutes, add water to the dal. I personally like my dal to be 'not-so-thin-not-so-thick!' For this, you need to keep the water level about 1 to 1-1/2 inches above the dal. This also depends upon the variety of pulse you will be using. So, add water accordingly.

  • Now cover the cooker with its lid and let it cook on medium flame for 3-4 whistles.
  • After that, let the pressure cooker release its steam on it's own.
  • Once the cooker releases all the steam, open the lid and stir the cooked dal. Smell the magic to fire up your appetite! Your dal is ready to be enjoyed.
  • However, if you feel the dal is too thick, add some more water, preferably warm water, and let it simmer for some more time. On the other hand, if it's got too much of water, let it cook on medium flame till the time it acquires your choice of consistency. Keep stirring the dal in between.
